While at home, every morning James Bond preferred to eat the same breakfast which was his ideal breakfast. In From Russia with Love, Ian Fleming spared no detail in relating this curiosity:
"The single egg, in the dark blue egg cup with a gold ring around the top, was boiled for three and a third minutes. It was a very fresh, speckled brown egg from French Marans hens owned by some friends of May (Bond's housekeeper) in the country. Bond disliked white eggs and, faddish as he was in many small things, it amused him to maintain that there was such a thing as the perfect boiled egg."
Enthusiasts of James Bond books and movies may or may not realize that James Bond eats Black Copper Marans eggs in every single one of Ian Fleming's 12 James Bond novels whether they are fried, scrambled, boiled, beaten or raw with steak tartar, served with champagne, or with bacon, French Black Copper Maran Eggs are written about.
It should be no surprise that both James Bond and author Ian Fleming had a genuine love and enthusiasm for these wonderful Heritage chickens, the French Black Copper Marans Eggs!
The Black Copper Marans chicken originated in western France. In small numbers, now can be found in the United States, Canada, England, Australia, possibly Switzerland and Belgium. The American standard adheres to the French standard which calls for the shanks and toes to be lightly feathered. (An absence of feathers on the shanks is a disqualification of the breed standard.)
They a dual purpose chicken which are highly sought after and best known for their rich large dark reddish-chocolate brown eggs as well as the fine flavor of its meat.
Since Marans are best known for their beautiful dark reddish-chocolate brown eggs, when selecting stock, this feature should not be overlooked.
The Black Copper Marans eggs are the darkest of all the Maran varieties and each egg takes longer to produce. Many feel the egg has a richer, silkier taste.
The French Black Copper Maran chickens are feathered legged birds, they are fast growers and are a good dual purpose breed for the homestead or backyard flock.
